A Visit to Vwawa, EECC Centre
Our POETIC team from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) recently visited Vwawa District Hospital in Songwe Region, the EECC centre for the EECCiT programme.
The team spent the day on the wards alongside health workers, reflecting on the implementation of Essential Emergency and Critical Care (EECC) and expressing our appreciation to the healthcare teams who have continued to deliver and sustain EECC beyond the initial implementation phase.
The results across our implementation sites are encouraging:
* 31% reduction in inpatient deaths
* EECC coverage increased from 27% to 75%
* More than 1,000 health workers trained
Yet the strongest evidence of sustainability may not be found in the numbers alone. It is reflected in the ownership demonstrated by health workers themselves.

This is the kind of transformation we aim for: not simply introducing a new intervention, but embedding essential emergency and critical care into routine practice and health-system culture.
