MUHAS researchers win the inaugural Lancet–Elsevier Foundation Evidence to Impact Award 🏆
Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) proudly congratulates the Essential Emergency and Critical Care in Tanzania (EECCiT) team, The team has been named one of three winners of the first Lancet–Elsevier Foundation Evidence to Impact Awards.
The award recognises research teams that go beyond publishing findings and use implementation science, together with communities, to change how health care is delivered.
In African hospitals, 1 in 8 patients is critically ill, and more than half do not receive basic life-saving care such as oxygen, fluids and vital signs monitoring. The EECCiT programme, developed with the Ministry of Health, UNICEF and Karolinska Institutet, is changing this in Tanzania.
Since June 2025, more than 1,000 health workers have been trained across 79 facilities in six regions. EECC coverage has risen from 27% to 75%, and early results show a 31% reduction in inpatient mortality in implementing facilities.
This recognition reflects MUHAS’ commitment to research that saves lives in our health facilities. Congratulations to the team, our partners, and the health workers and EECC champions who made it possible.
