APPRISE THUMB TRIAL FIRST CO-DESIGN MEETING

The first APPRISE THUMB trial co design meeting took place on the 06th of August 2025 at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) bringing together the APPRISE Project leadership alongside teams from Mwananyamala and Amana Regional Referral Hospitals. Each hospital was represented by a lead obstetrician, an anaesthetist, and nurses from both the theatre and postnatal wards, together with their respective data collectors.

The main objective of the meeting was to share and review baseline data findings from the two hospitals and, through collaborative discussion, co-design the first phase of the THUMB trial , in a way that aligns with the unique local context of each facility.

The THUMB trial is a multi-centre cluster trial focused on evaluating the implementation of a perioperative care complex intervention designed to improve outcomes from haemorrhage during and after caesarean sections in African hospitals. As an outcome of this meeting, the next steps will involve consolidating the agreed strategies into practical checklists for the first phase of the trial, followed by a second phase of data collection.
